Costco has halted the sale of certain restaurant gift cards due to the unexpected suspension of the program by the third-party supplier, which means that customers are unable to use any cards they have previously purchased.
Costco communicated through an online message to members who obtained any Synergy Restaurant Gift Cards between October 27, 2025, and January 26, 2026.
"We have sadly been informed by Synergy Gift Card Network/Synergy World that they will cease operations as of January 31, 2026," Costco stated. "If you are unable to redeem the remaining balance after this date, please return the cards to the nearest Costco for a refund."
"We truly regret any inconvenience this may have caused," added the retailer. Synergy World, a third-party company responsible for the distribution and oversight of gift cards across the country,
recently announced its intention to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which results in the cessation of its restaurant card program and renders any unused cards invalid.
"It is with deep regret that Synergy World has decided to discontinue the Synergy Restaurant Gift Card Program," the company stated in a release to ABC News.
Although the company has not detailed the specific restaurants affected, Costco pointed out that the Domino's gift cards currently in stores are not part of this recall.
Generally, Costco does not provide refunds for gift card transactions; however, they will make an exception in this case.
ABC News has reached out to both Synergy World and Costco for information about the particular cards and restaurants that are involved.
